Cairo (Egypt), July 27: Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit and Tunisian Foreign Minister Othman Jerandi discussed on Monday the latest political developments in Tunisia.
During a phone conversation, Aboul-Gheit and Jerandi tackled the presidential decisions made on Sunday, the Arab League said in a statement.
On Sunday, violent protests broke out in several Tunisian provinces as protesters expressed anger at the deterioration of the North African nation's health, economic and social situations, calling for the departure of the government and the dissolution of the parliament chaired by Rached Ghannouchi, leader of the Ennahdha party.
The protests led Tunisian President Kais Saied to remove Hichem Mechichi from the post of prime minister and to suspend all activities of the Assembly of People's Representatives, the parliament.
Saied also announced that he will temporarily head the government until he appoints a new prime minister. The president also announced that he annulled the immunity of all parliament members.
Meanwhile, the top Tunisian diplomat briefed Aboul-Gheit on the situation in the wake of the decisions made by President Saied, according to the statement.
For his part, the Arab League chief voiced full support for the Tunisian people, expressing hope that Tunisia will restore stability and security soon.
