Washington [US], July 23: U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday condemned the attack on U.S. Congressman Lee Zeldin who's running for governor of the state of New York.
"I condemn the attack on Congressman Zeldin in the strongest terms," Biden said in a statement. "Violence has absolutely no place in our society or our politics."
Zeldin, the Republican candidate for governor of New York, was attacked by a man wielding a sharp object during a campaign event in Fairport, New York, on Thursday.
"Someone tried to stab me on stage during this evening's rally," Zeldin tweeted on Thursday. "I was able to grab his wrist and stop him for a few moments until others tackled him."
Zeldin noted he was OK and that all other attendees were safe. The attacker was in custody.
Zeldin, a U.S. Army Reserve lieutenant colonel who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2015, will face off against incumbent New York Governor Kathy Hochul in November.
Hochul, a Democrat, tweeted that she's "relieved to hear" that Zeldin was not injured and that the suspect was in custody.
"I condemn this violent behavior in the strongest terms possible -- it has no place in New York," she added.
