Biden to call for further support for Ukraine

Nov 11, 2024

Washington [US], November 11: US President Joe Biden intends to push for continued support for Ukraine in the final weeks of his presidency, his National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Sunday.
Sullivan told US broadcaster CBS that Biden would present this position in Congress and to the incoming administration of the Republican Donald Trump.
He reaffirmed that the US government plans to deliver all previously promised aid to Ukraine for fighting the Russian invasion by the transfer of power to Trump on January 20.
During his campaign, Trump announced that he would quickly end the war in Ukraine, which has been ongoing since February 2022. However, he has not yet specified how he intends to do this. There is concern in Biden's White House and in Kiev that the crucial US assistance to Ukraine could be drastically reduced.
According to Sullivan, Biden wants to argue that Ukraine will need support even after the end of his term as the country remains at risk regardless of developments on the battlefield or at the negotiating table. Biden is scheduled to meet Trump at the White House on Wednesday.
Biden's security adviser emphasized that the decision about negotiations with Russia must lie solely with Ukraine.
At the same time, he expressed confidence that the sanctions on Russia were having an impact. He pointed to inflation and the long-term prospects for economic growth in the country: For Russia, it is increasingly looking bleak. (DPA)
