Amsterdam [Netherlands], May 30: The incident happened at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam (Netherlands) when the passenger plane was preparing to take off to Denmark.
The New York Times reported on May 30 that a person was sucked into a plane engine operating at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and authorities have not yet identified his identity.
Royal Dutch Airlines KLM issued a statement saying that the incident that occurred on May 29 (local time) involved flight KL1341 scheduled to depart for Billund (Denmark).
"We are currently taking care of the passengers and staff who witnessed the incident at Schiphol airport," according to the statement.
It is unclear whether the victim was sucked into the plane's engine by accident or intentional action. KLM has not said whether this person is an employee of the airline or the airport.
The incident involves an ERJ-190 jet aircraft manufactured by Embraer (Brazil) and providing KLM's Cityhopper service, including short-distance flights such as to London (UK), according to AFP.
Images posted on Radio NOS showed many fire trucks and ambulances gathered around the plane near the departure terminal.
Writing on social networks, the Schiphol airport management board said "there was a terrible incident when a person fell into the plane's engine", and expressed their condolences to the victim's relatives.
Safety and security measures are strict at Schiphol Airport and accidents are rare at this busy airport, which handled about 5.5 million passengers last month alone.
In January, a man died when he climbed into a plane engine at Salt Lake International Airport (USA). Police said the man had previously gone through the emergency exit at the airport.
