Panic in east coast as Australian weather bureau issues false tsunami warning
Sep 26, 2024
Sydney [Australia], September 26: Australians were briefly sent into panic on Wednesday morning after the national weather service accidentally issued a tsunami warning for the country's east coast.
The national Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) mistakenly issued a warning for the states of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania via a push notification on its weather app. The BOM immediately deleted the warnings and announced that they were "issued to the public in error as part of tests to tsunami early warning system software."
It added that it "acknowledges and apologises for any confusion that this test has caused."
Queensland state disaster coordinator Shane Chelepy called the mistake "unfortunate" and said that the warning should never have been sent.
"It did include the words that it was a test, but it was not as clear as it could have been," he said. (DPA)
