Bangkok [Thailand], August 24: According to the Bangkok Post, the Thai Flying Service charter plane took off from Suvarnabhumi Airport near Bangkok at 2:46 p.m. bound for Ko Mai Chee Airport in Trat province. About 11 minutes later, the plane lost contact with air traffic control and was later found to have crashed into a mangrove forest in Bang Pakong district, Chachoengsao province, about 100 kilometers southeast of Bangkok.
The Nation newspaper quoted a witness as saying that he heard a loud bang before the plane crashed into the forest. Debris hit a house in the area.
After receiving the news, rescue teams arrived at the scene and found the plane's wreckage scattered and partially submerged in mud. More than 300 soldiers and volunteers were deployed for the search and authorities opened an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
By early morning on August 23, Mr. Chonlatee, Governor of Chachoengsao Province, announced that it was likely that all nine people on board the plane had died. According to Thai media, there were five Chinese passengers and four Thais on board, including two pilots and two flight attendants. Among the Chinese passengers, two were only 12 and 13 years old. Xinhua News Agency quoted a statement from the Chinese Embassy in Thailand confirming that five Chinese citizens on board had died. Mr. Chonlatee said that difficult terrain and heavy rain had hindered the search process.
