Abuja [Nigeria], May 31: Nigeria's president suddenly changed the national anthem, angering people and questioning his priorities as the country grapples with its worst economic crisis in decades.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the decision to bring back Nigeria 's former national anthem was aimed at celebrating diversity in the African country , "representing everyone and showing how we are committed to being become each other's brothers and sisters", according to AFP.
But this move has faced criticism from people struggling to make a living in a context where the Nigerian economy has been severely affected by Mr. Tinubu's reforms since last year. The phrase "Not my national anthem" has been trending on Nigerian social media.
Mr. Tinubu signed the law on the national anthem at the presidential palace on May 29, on the first anniversary of his inauguration. It's also been a year since the leader made a surprise announcement about eliminating costly fuel subsidies.
The move, along with other reforms, caused gas prices to triple and the cost of living to skyrocket as Nigeria's local currency, the naira, slid against the dollar.
Many poor people have had to cut back on their diet and give up foods such as meat, eggs and milk, while in the north of the country, the economic crisis forced people to eat poor-quality rice that was often used as food. fish's food.
Meanwhile, Mr Tinubu pledged that his reforms would help the country in the long run.
Politicians from the ruling APC party say the new national anthem will also benefit Nigeria. According to local media, senator Tahir Monguno said the song would "inspire a spirit of patriotism and cooperation" as well as "chart a path to broader unity".
The law on the national anthem was passed in just a few days and surprised many people, but Mr. Tinubu has long expressed his desire to return to the song that was chosen as Nigeria's first national anthem.
"If I had my way, I would bring back our first national anthem," he said in an interview before becoming president.
The song was used as the Nigerian national anthem in the period 1960-1978, after Nigeria gained independence from British colonialism.
