Kumar Community in Assam struggles to preserve 200-year-old pottery tradition as Diwali nears

Jorhat (Assam), October 24 (ANI): As Diwali approaches, the Kumar community in Nimati Bhitor Kokila Kumar Gaon, Assam, struggles to maintain their 200-year-old pottery tradition. This 200-year-old art, which once served as a primary source of livelihood, is now on the verge of extinction, leaving community in shadow of uncertainty. The Kumar community, known for crafting clay utensils along the banks of the Brahmaputra, is facing a grim reality. The pottery craft, once a primary source of income, is nearing extinction due to modern competition and lack of resources. Approximately 120 families reside in the village, with most living below the poverty line, highlighting economic vulnerability. The community faces inadequate governmental support & challenges in sourcing the special clay required for pottery, leading to a decline in artisanship. Without immediate intervention and support, the rich cultural heritage of the Kumar community may be lost.
