Rare species of hog badgers found in Tripura

Agartala (Tripura), June 18 (ANI): A rare species of hog badgers were found in a village in Salema district of Tripura, for the first time ever. It is a threatened species and has characteristics of both pig and bear. Last year, it was also recovered in Assam. Chief Wildlife Warden of Tripura, Dr DK Sharma said, "It is happy news that we have recovered three young hog badger from Salema area. It is a threatened species and has characteristics of both pig and bear. Its food habit is omnivorous and eats small fruits and animals. It was not recorded in Tripura earlier and last year it was also recovered in Assam."All three hog badgers' cubs have been shifted to the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary for nurturing and two of them are doing well while one of them was in dehydrated condition and under treatment. Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, located nearly 25 kilometres from Agartala, is the biggest of the four sanctuaries in the state.
