Water crisis escalates in Srinagar as the water levels in the Jhelum river continue to plummet

Feb 20, 2025

Srinagar, Feb 20 (ANI): Climatological data reveals a worrying trend as a significant reduction in annual rainfall at Jhelum River. This river, considered as the lifeline of Kashmir, plays a crucial role in sustaining the agriculture, power generation, and domestic water supply. Now, its water levels are alarmingly decreasing which not only jeopardizes the livelihoods of countless farmers who depend on irrigation but also compromises the availability of potable water for local communities. Meanwhile, Agriculture is the backbone of Kashmir's economy as the significant portion of the population relying on farming for their livelihoods. This lack of adequate water supply can lead to diminished crop yields and threatening food security. The decreasing water levels in Jhelum River also can lead to contamination of remaining water supplies, heightening the risk of waterborne diseases. Vulnerable populations, particularly children and the elderly, are at a greater risk of illness in such scenarios.
